Jessica
Sands:
Sultry
Diva With Aloha
A
couple of years ago, I had
been working on a project
in LA when I came across a
dinner house named
Miceli’s.
Miceli’s Is
famous world wide for the
fact that the only way you
can get a job there is to
be able to sing, then
serve pizza.
I had stopped in
for a meeting and from
behind me came a
sultry/soothing voice that
made me spin around to see
who this was.
After a few more
song, I approached her to
introduce myself
(professionally) and to my
amazement, it was a local
girl from
Kailua
.
Okay, I wasn’t
blown away about the
Hawaii
connection, just that I
have met 3 different
artists during that trip
that left
Hawaii
for the “bigger deal”.
Jessica
Sands was born in 77 and
was raised in
Hawaii
until she was about 15,
when she moved to
Seattle
.
After high school
and collage she came back
to
Hawaii
to re-connect and spend
time with her family.
Her mother is a
very close source of
reality and wisdom
according to Jessica.
Brother and sister,
Todd and Jacquie are very
close to her as well. Her
father is none other than
50’s-60’s pop star
Tommy Sands.
No doubt the
genetics had her in place
to follow suit.
You
might have a few local
calendars that have
Jessica’s classic
Hawaii
beauty captured in a few
“sexy” poses.
But to her it was a
fun time with her friend,
famed photographer Vince
Cavateo.
But it was during
this time that Jessica
found the first sign of
the gift she
had……….her voice.
It was her junior
year of collage when she
considered being a singer
as a possible profession
and most of all, a shear
path to spiritual freedom.
It
was at that time that
Jessica, who was now back
in
Seattle
, joined a series of Top
40 bands.
For over 9 years,
Jessica honed her vocal
skill and stage presence
to that of a seasoned
veteran.
At one point, she
received a demo deal with
RCA and was also doing
some development demos for
other major labels in the
mainland.
But it was the last
2 years that Jessica says
she has personally grown
the most, both with her
voice and with her life.
But
it takes time to develop a
unique sound and style
that makes you a real
artist and Jessica has
done it.
Though Jessica has
participated in many Pop
cover bands, its the shows
that she does with her
father during west coast
tours and yo-hip jazz bars
that really sets her apart
from the rest.
Jessica’s
interpretation of Jazz
standers is so refined and
has such a personal flare
that along with her
beautiful stage presence
and brilliant smile, you
quickly are overcome with
the moment and forget
where you’re at.
Currently,
Jessica is in
Japan
for a 6 month show
schedule and then it’s a
run back to the mainland
for another crazy touring
and recording schedule.
Jessica misses
Hawaii
so much that she is always
contemplating just working
and recording here, but
all the progressive
opportunities are in the
mainland.
Jessica Sands is
truly another local talent
that no matter where
she’s at, she’s truly
Hawaiian.
Loving her home,
family and friends around
the world and always
carries the Mana of
Hawai’i in her smile and
in her voice.
Another Hawaiian
treasure proudly walking
the walk.
