Kilauea
volcano is not the only thing rumbling on the
Big
Island
. For nearly
seven years, the eclectic groove band
Moemoea has been providing their
Big
Island
folks with
some of the most mind-blowing live
performances and innovative music ever seen
in these parts.
With their debut album Moemoelutionary Music in hand and legions of faithful fans in place,
Moemoea is about to explode!
While there simply isn’t just one
word that can adequately describe Moemoea,
fans usually leave the shows saying the same
thing – “Wow!”
Created in 1998, the band has created
a sound and style that quite possibly, can
never be duplicated.
Even
at first glance, Moemoea casts a radiance of
creativity and diversity. The members hail
from various locales and represent a myriad
of ethnicities from Hawaiian to Puerto
Rican, Polish to Portuguese along with all
others in between. It is no surprise that
their powerful live performances encompass a
broad range of styles from funk and reggae
to Latin and hip-hop.
Combine them all together and you
will understand why there is no genre to
truly describe Moemoea. As a result, the
band has affectionately coined the term Moemoelutionary
Music – to provide some label on a
style that is otherwise “unlabable.” The
equation is quite simple: Moemoea +
Revolutionary = Moemoelutionary.
Check
out the good humans who make up the band:
Peter Frank (Vocalist)
is the brotha with a powerful nasal delivery
whose lead vocals on songs like Tumbling
Down and Morning
Ride, solidifies his position in
Moemoea. Originally from Papakolea,
Oahu
and raised on the east end of
Molokai
, Peter’s
antics are quite provocative and absolutely
entertaining. EVERYBODY knows Peter Frank.
Rob (Lead Guitar) is an
eclectic soul originally from the sleepy
former plantation town of
Waialua
on the
North Shore of Oahu. From Herbie Hancock to
Miles Davis, Rob’s unique interest in
music fueled his desire to be in a band that
was like no other. Kalei
(Bass and
Keyboards) is Moemoea’s “beautiful
spirit amongst beautiful spirits.” With a
heart of gold, Kalei’s love of hip hop and
latin music has provided him with a creative
edge that has been a cornerstone in the
creation of Moemoea’s sound. Both Kalei
and his brother Kiliona
(Rhythm Guitar), spent most of their
childhood on the windward side of
Oahu
in the town of
Kailua
.
Kiliona (a.k.a. “Moku”) is
Moemoea’s man of wisdom whose
contributions have been appreciated far
beyond the musical realm. He is a man of
substance and great talents whose creativity
has also laid pillars in the foundation of
Moemoelutionary music. Kurt, the Funke’ deylah Monsta (Lead Vocals) can be referred to as
Moemoea’s Minister of Information. He is a
talented, creative soul who possesses a
heart of fire and undaunted conviction. He
is a revolutionary poet in all sense of the
word whose intellect and small town Ka’u
roots have given rise to one amazing brotha.
Orlando
(drums)
is originally from
Oakland
,
California
and
currently resides in the town of
Honomu
on the
Big
Island
’s storied
Hamakua coast. Raised on the
Big
Island
since his
teenage years,
Orlando
is a
creative, compassionate brotha who has
constantly devoted his life toward making
things better for those around him. Not to
be undersold, the final piece of the picture
belongs to Mati
(Bass, Keyboards), the extremely hard
working and talented virtuoso who is also a
pillar of great love and compassion. He is
the Moemoea “Dog man,” who will quickly
rip into a heavy funk groove while also
being able to tell you all there is to know
about training a dog. Mati is the true
embodiment of the word “survival.”
Since
their founding in 1998, Moemoea has been on
a journey. The journey has brought them from
their unbridled, “testosterous” sound to
where they are at today – on the fringe of
being one of the greatest acts to ever come
out of the 50th state. Moemoea is
a phenomenon, a condition of sorts that will
continue to stock the world with good music,
good information, and most importantly, good
humans.
Check
out Moemoea and rest assured, you too will
be saying, “Wow.”
