“Aloha!
This is Kava Music, and this goes out to all
the good people of the world…”
From the
opening statement on Kava Music’s new CD
“The Pacific Sessions”, you can tell
they are unique. Starting the CD with the
sounds of searching through radio stations
to find good music, and then landing on
their song Hear Me Calling with their shout
out dedication, Kava Music’s “The
Pacific Sessions” has a totally different
feel.
Kava
Music is from
Ewa
Beach
,
Oahu
.
They are a blend of different cultures and
styles of music to create one unique sound.
Starting with their first track with a
reggae beat, to their next with Tahitian
flair, and following with a jazzy style, it
is hard to peg them with one genre title.
Their music also covers blues/rap, rock n
roll, and island contemporary. All of their
music is heavily influenced by their surfing
culture.
Casey
Teixeira, who plays rhythm guitar, has
written most of the songs on the CD. “The
Pacific Sessions CD was inspired by our
travels surfing, partying and playing music
between
Hawaii
,
Tahiti
,
and
California
.
We would cover all 3 destinations within one
trip. This span of time lasted for about 2
years, all in which we came up with this
music that captured these times in our
lives. We never thought we'd ever record
these songs, but it was always a dream of
ours to do.”
What
really sparked this CD, was the original
motion picture "The Ride". This
film was written, directed, and produced by
Nathan Kurosawa. Track 7- The Ride was
written for the film and is on the Original
Motion Picture Soundtrack. Premiered at the
Hawaii Film Festival in November 2003, at
Sunset on the Beach at
Waikiki
, (to a record breaking
audience of 15,000 people), “The Ride”
held rave reviews.
Most of
the songs on the CD are written about the
places that have left impressions on them,
like the fun blues/rap song Burger House
Blues. “Anyone that knows old school
Ewa
Beach
,
remembers Barney’s Burger House. This song
reminisces the old burger joints on the
island.”
Acoustic
version of the song Urashimataro (Taro’s
Song), written by lead guitarist Phil Daher,
is a rarity. “When we play this song live,
it is rock n roll, punk style, it makes you
want to jump up and down!”
Looking
at the CD with the
island
of
Moorea
in the background, it really reflects the
style of Kava Music. Mistaken for a band
that plays only Hawaiian music, people are
pleasantly surprised to hear them jam their
rock n roll song, Fallen, with it’s Jimmy
Hendrix riffs.
The
future for Kava Music? “Having people
enjoy our music, playing more gigs, and
finishing another CD in the making.”
