Shaun
Reyes, Chad Kim and Shane Mahiai all met
while attending a party in 2000. That
meeting that same night leads to an all
night jam session for all three. It
became obvious that the trio had chemistry
and passion for playing music - call it just
being in the right place at the right time
– they form Kani Makou. Through the
years, they played music together on
numerous occasions and at numerous places.
Soon, it became clear that recording an
album was the next step that they felt they
were ready for.
Fall of 2002 Kani Makou began the process of
recording their debut album, with the aid of
Score Records and Dave Tucciarone, the
creation of Easy Stylin began.
Kani Makou already had 8 original songs to
record. All they needed were 4 more to
make it complete. The first song they
selected was Rock N’ Groove, a
smooth and easy reggae track composed by
Bunny Wailer. The next two songs
selected were Cruizin and I Wanna
Be Her Man, written by Glenn Medeiros,
which he kindly allowed them to record.
The final song they selected was Guava
Jam, an instrumental composed by Peter
Moon, which completed the song selection for
the album.
Dave Tucciarone played a major role in Kani
Makou’s debut album. He produced,
mixed, mastered, as well as performed on a
few tracks. His talents and skills in
music are absolutely amazing.
Also contributing to the album are talented
artists Toni Kaonohi (vocals on Rock N’
Groove), Karl Zinsman of Three Plus
(vocals on I Wanna Be Her Man), and
Jon Yamasato (vocals on Angel Tonight).
Kani Makou feels very fortunate to have
these talented artists perform on their
album.
Easy Stylin
contains an eclectic blend of music styles:
ranging from contemporary reggae to island
contemporary. The album features
dancehall reggae tracks such as Rock N’
Groove and Dance; island style
music such as Local Girl; acoustics
such as Ease My Heart and Angel
Tonight - a mixture sure to please all
music lovers of all types.
Recently, three great musicians were added
to Kani Makou. They are: Paul Caris
(drummer), Eric Ho (bass player), and Ronnie
Esteban (keyboards). Kani Makou
feels very blessed to have this opportunity
to share their music. Imagine, three
years ago they were a bunch of backyard
musicians who had to borrow instruments to
play music together, they have come a long
way by releasing their first album, Easy
Stylin, although they still consider
themselves backyard musicians at heart.
Kani Makou thanks everyone who has stuck
with them through this long journey
